Artificial Intelligence Preparedness Index 2024 – India Ranks at 72nd #ScienceFather #researchawards

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) just released a full Artificial Intelligence Preparedness Index (AIPI) Dashboard. This tool will sort and rank 174 countries around the world based on how ready they are to use AI. The goal of this project, which was posted on their website, is to see how well each country can use and adapt AI technologies.

There are three main groups of countries that the AIPI looks at: Low-Income Countries (LIC), Emerging Market Economies (EM), and Advanced Economies (AE). Singapore, Denmark, and the United States are at the top of the list of AEs, with scores of 0.80, 0.78, and 0.77, respectively. India, which is an EM, got a score of 0.49 and is now ranked 72nd in the world. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and China, which are all close by, were ranked 113th, 92nd, and 31st, with scores of 0.38, 0.43, and 0.63, respectively.

Four main areas are used to judge a country’s AI readiness: its digital infrastructure, its human capital and labor market policies, its creativity and economic integration, and its rules and regulations. The IMF can correctly figure out how each country can use AI technologies to its advantage by looking at them as a whole.

In a study released in January, the IMF pointed out the big effect AI could have on jobs around the world. It said that AI could threaten about 33% of jobs in Advanced Economies, 24% of jobs in Emerging Markets, and 18% of jobs in Low-Income Countries. In total, it said that AI could threaten about 40% of jobs around the world. However, it was also emphasized that AI can boost productivity and help new industries and jobs grow.

Giovanni Melina, an economist at the IMF, wrote a piece that talked about the two sides of AI’s fast growth. AI has the potential to make economic inequality worse, but it also has the potential to make people more productive, create jobs, and start new industries. In reaction to these problems and chances, the AIPI Dashboard is meant to give policymakers, researchers, and the public the information they need to make smart decisions about how to make sure that everyone can enjoy the benefits of AI progress.

Japan’s Innovative Approach to Artificial Intelligence Legislation #ScienceFather #researchawards

Japan has introduced the Act on the Promotion of Research, Development and Utilisation of Artificial Intelligence-Related Technologies, a law designed to encourage AI research and development while positioning the country as a global leader in the field. Unlike the European Union’s AI Act, which imposes a rigid regulatory framework, Japan’s legislation takes an innovation-driven approach that promotes flexibility, collaboration, and advancement in AI technologies. At its core, the law establishes an Artificial Intelligence Strategy Headquarters under the Cabinet, which is tasked with formulating a national Basic Plan for AI that covers research, industrial deployment, international cooperation, and public education.

This approach stands in sharp contrast to the European Union’s risk-based classification system, which assigns obligations to AI developers depending on the level of risk posed by their technologies. The EU’s framework prioritizes digital sovereignty, human dignity, and strict compliance, with penalties for violations. By comparison, Japan avoids strict compliance measures and instead encourages stakeholders—including universities, local governments, research institutions, businesses, and the public—to voluntarily cooperate within a nationally coordinated framework that supports innovation and responsible growth.

Japan’s philosophy rests on the belief that low-regulation environments allow innovation ecosystems to thrive, while voluntary collaboration can help mitigate risks associated with AI. However, this raises concerns about accountability and safeguards. Without clear standards, the risks of bias, disinformation, or algorithmic failures may go unaddressed, especially in sensitive domains such as healthcare, defence, and public services. The challenge lies in ensuring that voluntary principles lead to effective safeguards and prevent potential harm without undermining the law’s pro-innovation intent.

On a global scale, Japan’s legislation represents a strategic response to economic and demographic challenges, such as a shrinking workforce and increasing global competition in AI. By promoting international cooperation and norm-setting, Japan seeks to align itself with evolving global standards while distinguishing its model from the stricter frameworks of other regions. The law reflects a gamble on institutional trust and collaboration, leaving its success dependent on effective coordination among stakeholders and the ability to refine policies based on real-world experiences. Provisions for future reviews underscore Japan’s recognition of the need for adaptability in the fast-changing AI landscape.

Role of Artificial Intelligence in Education #ScienceFather #researchawards

When ChatGPT was launched in November 2022, it immediately sparked widespread discussion in the field of education. Many educators and parents were concerned about how it might affect the honesty and originality of student work. Teachers found it increasingly difficult to distinguish between assignments completed by students and those generated by AI, which raised new challenges in academic integrity. Early attempts to ban AI tools in schools proved ineffective, as students quickly discovered ways to bypass these restrictions. Instead of resisting, some educators began to adapt by asking students to analyze and critique AI-generated content as part of their assignments.

The rise of generative AI also highlighted both its strengths and weaknesses. While it offers powerful support for learning, it has been shown to produce errors and even “hallucinate” facts, making it an unreliable sole source of information. This double-edged nature of AI has led to debates over its role in classrooms. A study revealed that about 60% of high-school students admitted to using ChatGPT for assignments, often knowing it could be considered cheating. Yet, for others, it became a useful learning tool that improved understanding, offering opportunities for creativity and growth when used responsibly.

AI also has the potential to transform education through personalized learning. It can provide instant feedback, support students with special needs, and make lessons more engaging by correcting mistakes in real time. These applications show how technology can assist teachers in making education more inclusive and interactive. However, to balance the benefits with accountability, new forms of real-time assessments such as interviews and oral discussions can help educators evaluate students’ actual understanding and skills beyond written assignments.

Despite these advancements, AI cannot replace the human role in teaching. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the irreplaceable value of human connection, empathy, and interaction in the learning process. Teachers bring emotional support, mentorship, and social guidance that AI cannot replicate. At the same time, the growing use of AI raises serious concerns about privacy and data security, as sensitive information could be collected and misused. To ensure a positive future, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders must work together to shape the role of AI in education, prioritizing the well-being, rights, and development of students above all.

India Launches UPI-UPU Project For Cross-Border Payments #ScienceFather #researchawards

The Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, launched the UPI-UPU Integration Project at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai, marking a transformative step in global financial connectivity. This initiative integrates India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the Universal Postal Union’s Interconnection Platform, enabling fast, affordable, and secure cross-border remittances. By bridging these two systems, the project aims to simplify international money transfers and enhance financial inclusion on a global scale.

The collaboration involves India’s Department of Posts, NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), and the UPU, bringing together India’s real-time payment infrastructure with the global postal network of 192 countries. It addresses long-standing challenges in cross-border remittances, such as high transaction costs, lengthy processing times, and limited access for underserved populations. By leveraging India’s postal network and digital ecosystem, the initiative promises to make international payments as seamless as domestic transactions.

India has pledged an investment of $10 million to strengthen global postal services with a focus on digital payments, e-commerce, and capacity building. The country’s proven digital public infrastructure, built on Aadhaar, Jan Dhan Yojana, UPI, and India Post Payments Bank, underpins this effort. With over 560 million bank accounts opened, largely in women’s names, and India Post handling over 900 million deliveries last year, the scale and inclusivity of India’s system provide a strong foundation for expanding financial services worldwide.

The UPI-UPU initiative is expected to significantly reduce global remittance costs and boost financial inclusion, directly supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals. With UPI already processing nearly half of the world’s digital payments, this integration will empower diaspora communities and strengthen postal administrations with new revenue opportunities. As a model of international collaboration, the project reflects India’s leadership in building interoperable digital solutions, paving the way for faster, more inclusive, and cost-effective global commerce.

SpaceX’s Fram2 Mission #ScienceFather #researchawards

SpaceX is preparing to launch the Fram2 mission, which will take astronauts directly over Earth’s polar regions to conduct pioneering scientific research. The mission, named after the historic Norwegian ship used in 19th-century Arctic and Antarctic expeditions, will carry four astronauts aboard a Crew Dragon capsule launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Unlike past missions, Fram2 will enter a groundbreaking 90-degree circular orbit, offering a unique vantage point of Earth’s unexplored polar regions.

The mission’s scientific goals are ambitious and forward-looking. For the first time, astronauts will capture X-ray images in space to study the effects of prolonged spaceflight on the human body. In addition, the cultivation of mushrooms in microgravity will be tested as a potential sustainable food source for future deep-space missions, including those to Mars. Fram2 will also investigate Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancements (STEVE), a rare and mysterious atmospheric light phenomenon that occurs near the poles.

Beyond science, Fram2 emphasizes public engagement through the Fram2Ham Competition, where amateur radio operators will decode images transmitted from space. This interactive approach not only connects the public to the mission but also builds excitement around space exploration. With its unique orbit, cutting-edge experiments, and inclusive engagement, Fram2 marks a significant step in advancing human spaceflight and expanding the horizons of future exploration.
