UN Adopts First Global Resolution on Artificial Intelligence #ScienceFather #researchawards

 



On March 24, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the first-ever global resolution on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Sponsored by the United States and co-sponsored by 123 countries, including Russia, China, and Cuba, the resolution emphasizes that AI should benefit all nations while remaining safe, secure, trustworthy, and respectful of human rights. This marks a historic step in bringing global consensus to the governance of AI.

The resolution was driven by growing concerns over AI’s rapid development and its potential risks, including threats to human rights, misuse of personal data, and disruption to democratic processes. By addressing these issues, it aims to balance innovation with accountability, ensuring that AI technologies are deployed responsibly. It builds upon ongoing global efforts to create frameworks that minimize harms while enabling AI to contribute positively to society.

Key objectives of the resolution include closing the digital divide between developed and developing nations, safeguarding human rights, protecting personal data, strengthening privacy policies, and monitoring AI for potential risks. The United States engaged with more than 120 nations to negotiate the text, and the unanimous approval reflects a shared global commitment to collaborative AI governance.
