The Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, launched the
UPI-UPU Integration Project at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai, marking a transformative step in global financial connectivity. This initiative integrates India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the Universal Postal Union’s Interconnection Platform, enabling fast, affordable, and secure cross-border remittances. By bridging these two systems, the project aims to simplify international money transfers and enhance financial inclusion on a global scale.
The collaboration involves India’s Department of Posts, NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), and the
UPU, bringing together India’s real-time payment infrastructure with the global postal network of 192 countries. It addresses long-standing challenges in cross-border remittances, such as high transaction costs, lengthy processing times, and limited access for underserved populations. By leveraging India’s postal network and digital ecosystem, the initiative promises to make international payments as seamless as domestic transactions.
India has pledged an investment of $10 million to strengthen global postal services with a focus on digital payments, e-commerce, and capacity building. The country’s proven digital public infrastructure, built on Aadhaar, Jan Dhan Yojana,
UPI, and India Post Payments Bank, underpins this effort. With over 560 million bank accounts opened, largely in women’s names, and India Post handling over 900 million deliveries last year, the scale and inclusivity of India’s system provide a strong foundation for expanding financial services worldwide.
The
UPI-UPU initiative is expected to significantly reduce global remittance costs and boost financial inclusion, directly supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals. With UPI already processing nearly half of the world’s digital payments, this integration will empower diaspora communities and strengthen postal administrations with new revenue opportunities. As a model of international collaboration, the project reflects India’s leadership in building interoperable digital solutions, paving the way for faster, more inclusive, and cost-effective global commerce.
