SpaceX is preparing to launch the
Fram2 mission, which will take astronauts directly over Earth’s polar regions to conduct pioneering scientific research. The mission, named after the historic Norwegian ship used in 19th-century Arctic and Antarctic expeditions, will carry four astronauts aboard a Crew Dragon capsule launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Unlike past missions, Fram2 will enter a groundbreaking 90-degree circular orbit, offering a unique vantage point of Earth’s unexplored polar regions.
The mission’s scientific goals are ambitious and forward-looking. For the first time, astronauts will capture
X-ray images in space to study the effects of prolonged spaceflight on the human body. In addition, the cultivation of mushrooms in microgravity will be tested as a potential sustainable food source for future deep-space missions, including those to Mars. Fram2 will also investigate Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancements (STEVE), a rare and mysterious atmospheric light phenomenon that occurs near the poles.
Beyond science, Fram2 emphasizes public engagement through the
Fram2Ham Competition, where amateur radio operators will decode images transmitted from space. This interactive approach not only connects the public to the mission but also builds excitement around space exploration. With its unique orbit, cutting-edge experiments, and inclusive engagement, Fram2 marks a significant step in advancing human spaceflight and expanding the horizons of future exploration.
